Officers all over the US who performed rescue operations at ground zero were exposed to dust and other toxins that may have caused injury to their respiratory system.  In response, Frank Ferreyra, state president of the NYSFOP has orchestrated a program to help those officers who put their health at risk to save others.  The NYSFOP has collaborated with the Nassau University medical center of East Meadow, NY to treat any officers who are experiencing respiratory problems and those who would like to be tested.

Possible Contaminants at "Ground Zero" Include:
  • Smoke and Asbestos
  • Dust/Concrete
  • Lead and Dioxins
  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons
  • Other volatile agents
     

A board Certified Pulmonologist at Nassau University Medical Center can help:

  • immediate and confidential appointment
  • A physical exam will be performed a private office setting
  • A simple breathing test (to measure lung capacity) and a chest x-ray will be ordered
  • The entire process will take approximately 1 hour
  • Free Parking

Who will be offered an evaluation?

  • all WTC rescue and recovery workers
  • Persons with more than a few days of symptoms.
  • All persons who have symptoms of cough, shortness of breath or wheezing.
  • All persons who may have been exposed to environmental pollution at Ground Zero (construction workers, fire fighters, police officers, etc.)
  • Persons with underlying lung conditions such as asthma


Short Term effects may include:

  • Irritation of ear, nose and throat
  • Coughing and sneezing
  • Shortness of breath


Those who were exposed to Asbestos and or Dust may experience the following long term effects:

  • Collection of fluid around lungs
  • Chronic scarring of lungs
  • Lung Cancer
  • Mesothelioma
  • Chronic cough
  • Phlegm productions
  • shortness of breath


What preventative measures can you take?

  • Use properly fitted breathing devices (p100 w/asbestos filter, N-95 or Niosh approved respirators)
  • Remove dusty clothing at site while wearing mask
  • Shower and change clothes before going home
